Al Capone was a very complicated man.
He was a ruthless gangster yet a loving son, husband, and father. You did not want to cross Al Capone if you were deemed the enemy. He didn't take kindly to betrayal, traitors, or untrustworthiness. He was also considered a gentle giant. Giving money, candy, and gifts to the local neighborhood kids. He loved his family dearly and after his father passed away he made sure they were well taken care of.
I am reading a book my husband got me for Christmas called: Al Capone written by Deidre Adair.
I enjoy her style of writing even though it can be tricky at times. As her book is all on fact that she has gathered from the decedents of Al Capone.
He was very misunderstood, coming up in new York with very little. He had many siblings and his parents provided what they could, however being an Italian immigrant at those times was more tough than any other. And it proved harder to find work so his father did odd jobs until one day he could open up a barber shop and he worked there until the day he died.
Al met Johnny Torrio around the age of 15 and started running errands for him and this built his trust so he and Al moved to Chicago where Tony saw more opportunity and with that more money.
Shortly after arriving in Chicago they grew and the government didn't want them there so they moved to a little town just outside of Chicago, called Cicero. There they could provide all the vices the good people of Chicago and near by towns "needed".
One day while shopping with his wife, Johnny was shot 7 times and survived. In the hospital he decided to leave Cicero for good and go back to Italy. He left everything to a 26 year old Al Capone.
Al had pretty much been running the show from day one in Cicero even thought he was just Johnny's body guard. So nothing was really new to him except that all the profits we really now his and he answered to nobody. Even some of the police and government officials were on his payroll.
during his reign he was known for orchestrating the St. Valentines Day Massacre, the biggest mass shooting in Chicago at the time
His ruling was short lived when he was arrested on tax evasion. This was an excuse for the government to to arrest him. the government could not pin Capone to any dealings or murders.
While in Alcatraz he became I'll with syphilitic dementia and he served 8 of 11 years. He and his wife moved to one of their beach houses in Florida where he died at the age of 46.
